Obituary of Mabel A.R Nevins

Mabel Rose Nevins, a pioneering intellectual, devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 96, reuniting with her beloved husband, James L. Nevins Jr., after 64 years of marriage. Born and raised in Boston to Frank D. Rose and Mabel (Morrison) Rose, Mabel was the oldest of four children, Doris Beliveau, June Kennedy, and Frank Rose Jr.

A trailblazer in every sense of the word, Mabel earned her degree in Chemical Engineering from Northeastern University at a time when women in the field were scarce. She worked in the chemical industry starting in the 1950s, where her expertise and determination broke barriers and paved the way for future generations of women in engineering.

It was at Northeastern University that Mabel met her soulmate, Jim. Together, they embarked on a lifelong partnership, both personally and professionally, traveling the world, raising a family, and contributing to their community. In addition to her accomplishments in engineering, Mabel devoted much of her life to volunteerism. She was the president of the Mystic Valley Mental Health Association in the 1970s.  Mabel served for many years as a Town Meeting Representative. She was a fixture at open town meetings, passionately advocating for her community starting in the 1960s.  She was the one who did her research, asked pertinent questions, and kept projects and expenditures in check.

Her devotion to service extended into her love for the arts. Mabel was a long-time member of the Boston chapter of Ikebana/Sogetsu. She was part of an Ikebana team that won the prestigious Blue Ribbon for several consecutive years for their exhibit at the New England Flower Show. Her flower arrangements have also been featured in Ikebana exhibits at the Museum of Fine Arts. She was an active member of the MIT Women’s League.

Mabel and Jim purchased a cottage on Lake Winnipesaukee in the 1970’s.  It has been the summer gathering spot for three generations.  Days were spent swimming, boating, and just unwinding and enjoying time as a family.  There are endless wonderful memories filled with laughter and love.

Mabel was the beloved wife of the late James Nevins.  She was the loving and supportive mother of Steve Nevins of Burlington, Paul Nevins and his wife Eleanor of Portsmouth, NH, and the late James Gary Nevins.  She was the proud grandmother of Morgan Nevins of New York, NY, Travis Nevins of Portsmouth, NH, and Rachel Nevins of Boulder, Colorado.
