It would be very hard to write down all our beautiful memories we have of the Murphy family. John and Betty were our next door neighbors in Malden then vacation neighbors in Limerick Maine. We go back over 50 years. Laughter, songs, games, boat rides, and mommy’s juice will stay with us forever. Please know how much Paul and I love you all so much. So sorry for your great loss. I will always remember the first time I met Betty back in 1967. I was working as a secretary in an engineering firm in Cambridge when one of the nice engineers I was working for asked me if I would help him out by going out with him to dinner with his lawyer and his wife. Halfway through dinner I finally realized that the lawyer was actually one of his best friends. He wanted them to check me out to see if I would fit in to his life. We were married 4 months later. George was also an alumni of the First National Store's “earning your way through college” group. We lived in Malden and Betty took me under her wing. That first year we would do a girls' night out and go to the pool at the Y, afterwards going to Friendly's and having a Diet Coke and a hot fudge sundae. Then one day she told me that she was going to stop as she thought she was pregnant and did not want to jeopardize her health by swimming in a public pool. She and John had been trying for some time. Along came Beth, a wonderful Christmas present! I often wondered if it was the exercise of the pool or the sundaes that did it! A bunch of the crowd would rent cottages the same week and vacation together at Newfound Lake and then Cape Cod. One different couple would watch all the kids each night so that the grownups could have a nice dinner out. We moved to Maryland but would return to Massachusetts frequently as George's mother still lived in Malden, and we always visited the Murphys. We later moved to South Carolina. Betty and John came to visit us there. We were so glad they came because John passed away the following year. We had pizza and cocktails at the Highland Cafe in Malden the last time we were up there with a few of the old crowd. I sent Betty a picture of that evening this past Christmas. She and I had had a long telephone session last fall where we caught up on each other's lives. Betty was a wonderful person and she will be missed.
