Obituary of John Pietro Caputo

John Pietro Caputo, a retired chemical engineer, passed away at his home after an extended illness on Wednesday, January 25, 2023.  He was 90 years old. John was born in Winchester.  He was the son of Pietro and Angelina Caputo.  He grew up in Winchester and was a graduate of Winchester High School.  He furthered his education at Northeastern University earning his bachelor’s degree and then master’s degree in Chemical Engineering.  He served in the Army for almost three years.  He held the rank of 2^nd Lieutenant and was assigned to the Review and Analysis Division at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.  He worked at General Electric and Northrop Grumman Systems before taking a position at Raytheon.  At Raytheon, he worked on the guidance systems for the Patriot and Hawk Missiles.  He also spent over a year as the assistant plant manager at Raytheon’s assembly plant in Germany.  He and his wife used that opportunity to travel all of Europe.  He also taught classes on Materials and Processes in Manufacturing at Merrimack College and Fitchburg State University.  In his retirement years, he also volunteered for the Red Cross at the Hanscom Air Force Eye Clinic.   

John with his engineering mindset was a thinker and a planner.  He thought of Teflon coating for non-stick and natural gas  detectors long before they became household products.   His home was a perpetual improvement project.  He bricked his entire home, improved his driveway parking system, his landscape, and most of the interior rooms.  He was always in perpetual motion and unlike most he enjoyed the process of the renovation from the design, construction, to completion.  He also enjoyed working in his vegetable garden. 

John’s life revolved around his family.  He simply adored his wife, Marie.  He would dote on her and tend to her every whim.  They would spend summer vacations visiting her family in Glen Cove, New York.  They also traveled extensively, mostly to warm weather destinations in the Caribbean.  He was an extremely supportive father to his children.  He gave his children strong foundations to which they could build upon as adults.  He was there to celebrate their achievements and support them in their challenges.  He loved seeing his family grow as he became a Grandpa and Great Grandfather.  John lived an admirable life in a very humble manner.  He will be fondly remembered by all those he touched during his lifetime.  

John was the beloved husband of Marie (Orlando) Caputo who passed away in 2015.  He was the proud father of James Michael Caputo of Owasso Oklahoma, Susan Marie Strezo of Burlington, the late John P. Caputo Jr, and late Linda Marie Caputo.  He was the brother of Vincent Caputo of Cape Cod, the late Joseph Caputo, and late Mary Valentino.  He was the proud Grandpa of Melissa Caputo of Stafford, Viginia, Kathryn Caputo of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Allison Caputo of Bentonville, Arkansas, and Christina DeBarros & her husband Matthew and John Strezo of Burlington.  He was the great grandfather of William Tripp, III, Lucas Kulliback, Ethan Kulliback, Anthony DeBarros, and Siena DeBarros. He also leaves his caregiver for the last 8 months, Marcie Williams Thompson.  Without her care and support would not allowed John to remain and pass in his home as he wished.

A visiting hour will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., Burlington, on Monday, January 30 from 8:30 to 9:30am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Margaret Church in St. Veronica Parish, www.stveronicama.org, 111 Winn Street, Burlington at 10 a.m.  Services will conclude with a burial with military honors at Pine Haven Cemetery in Burlington.
