Obituary of John Flaherty

John F. Flaherty Sr., a resident of North Reading for 27 years, passed away at his home with his family by his side on Thursday morning, November 9, 2007. The husband of the late Grace V. (Mooney) he was 86 years old. John was born in Fitchburg. He was the son of the late Timothy and Agnes Flaherty. He was raised and educated in Fitchburg graduating from St. Bernard’s High School. John was a veteran of World War II serving his country in the United States Army. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, and the Victory Medal. After leaving the service John worked for 10 years at Railway Express as a Driver. John then went on to have a successful career as an electrician. He worked for 25 years at the Charlestown Navy Ship Yard retiring in 1973 and then went to work for Mass Water Resources from 1975 – 1992. John had a home in Hampton Beach where he spent much of his time in recent years. He loved to walk most especially at the beach and at times would walk up to ten miles a day. John was blessed to live a life that spanned 86 years. John is the beloved husband of the late Grace V. (Mooney). He is the loving father of Maureen & her husband Joseph Neary of Tewksbury, John F. Flaherty, Jr. & his wife Michelle of Burlington, Donald J. Flaherty & his wife Sheila of Burlington, Patricia O’Connor-Fluhr & her husband Charles Fluhr of Charlestown, Timothy J. Flaherty of Andover. He is the brother of Father Fredrick R. Flaherty of Hartford, CT and the late Paul Flaherty, Mary Dignan, and Elizabeth “Betty” McMullen. He is the grandfather of Lisa Neary, Julie Mejia, John F. III, Diana, Tyler, Jadyn, and Christopher Flaherty. He is the great grandfather of Marisa Mejia. Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Tuesday, November 13 at 10 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington at 11 a.m. Visiting hours Monday 4-8 p.m. Interment in Calvary Cemetery, Winchester.
