Obituary of Maria Angelina Costa
Maria Angelina Costa, a long-time resident of Burlington, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family, on May 2, 2025, at the age of 92.
Born in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, Azores, Portugal, Maria Angelina was determined from an early age to become a schoolteacher. This focus and commitment led her to a remarkable career spanning 46 years. After completing her elementary education, she attended high school at the Liceu Nacional of Ponta Delgada, graduating in 1948 with a general studies diploma. Following this, she enrolled in the Magistery School for Educators and became a teacher, making history as the youngest teacher at just 17 years old.
After a brief introduction to Octavio in 1950, they began their courtship, married in 1956, and started their teaching careers and life together.
Maria's dedication to her students was unwavering, and she was known for going above and beyond to ensure that each of them succeeded. Her impact on the community was profound, as she taught in Vila Franca, São Miguel, Azores, for 19 years before immigrating to the United States with her family in 1969. After settling in Somerville, she dedicated her entire career to teaching as a bilingual elementary teacher for the City of Somerville. She worked at various schools before finally teaching at her beloved Lincoln Park School until her retirement. In 1974, she graduated from Boston State College, earning her bachelor's degree in science of education and acquiring two teacher's certificates from the Boston Department of Education: one in elementary and another in Bilingual education. She later settled with her family in Burlington.
In addition to her teaching career, Maria Angelina actively volunteered in the Portuguese American community, contributing to socio-cultural activities throughout the Somerville and Cambridge areas for many years. She was passionate about tutoring, mentoring, and supporting those in need within her community.
After her retirement in 1996, Maria Angelina enjoyed various projects and hobbies, including exercise, gardening, painting, reading, cooking, and traveling. She particularly loved visiting Arizona, Portugal, and the Azores. She continued to tutor and often taught Portuguese classes to those eager to learn a new language and ESL to students needing English skills. Many people knew her for her beautiful calligraphy skills, as she frequently created exquisite cards for holidays, weddings, and birthdays.
Maria Angelina, the beloved wife of Octavio for 68 years, was the epitome of love and care. In 2021, the family joyously celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary, marking a milestone that symbolized their enduring everlasting love. Maria’s passion for her family was limitless, always meeting their needs first. She was a loving mother to Grace Maria of Burlington, Genadio and his wife Ruby of Plaistow, NH, Aires Manuel of Mesa, Arizona, Octavio Agusto and his wife Barbara of Algarve, Portugal, and Mario Jorge of Scottsdale, Arizona. Her warmth and care knew no bounds, as she was also a devoted sister to Aires Manuel and his wife, Maria, of Fall River, and sister-in-law to Maurino and Natalia of Salem, MA. Maria Angelina was also a loving grandmother to five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Many cousins, nephews, and nieces also survived her, all of whom were touched by her love and joy.
Maria Angelina's unwavering faith was the foundation of her life. Her strong beliefs provided comfort and strength to herself and those around her. A devout Catholic, she dedicated 40 years to being an active member of St. Margaret's Church, spreading joy through her choir participation. Her spiritual strength was evident in her active involvement at St. Joseph Parish in Somerville, MA, which also held a special place in her heart.
